Every year on 9 August, South Africans come together to celebrate National Women’s Day, a day dedicated to recognising the courage, resilience, and achievements of women who have shaped our nation. As we approach this important day, it is the perfect opportunity to reflect on our history, celebrate the present, and inspire the next generation of leaders.
Why Do We Celebrate Women’s Day?
Women’s Day commemorates the historic Women’s March of 9 August 1956, when more than 20,000 women from all walks of life marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria. They protested against the apartheid government’s pass laws, which sought to further restrict the movement and freedoms of Black South Africans.
Their peaceful demonstration became one of the defining moments in South Africa’s struggle for equality and justice. It also gave rise to the powerful phrase:
“Wathint’ Abafazi, Wathint’ Imbokodo!”
Translated into English, it means:
“You strike a woman, you strike a rock.”
More than 70 years later, these words continue to symbolise the strength, resilience, and determination of South African women.
The Role of Women in South Africa Today
Women continue to shape every corner of South African society. They are educators, healthcare professionals, entrepreneurs, engineers, scientists, artists, public servants, and community leaders. They raise families, mentor young people, build businesses, and create opportunities for future generations.
Despite significant progress, many women still face challenges, including unequal access to education, employment opportunities, and leadership positions. Women’s Day reminds us that while we celebrate how far we have come, there is still important work to be done to achieve true equality.
Education: Empowering the Next Generation
At The Tutor Company, we believe that education is one of the most powerful tools for creating opportunities and changing lives. Every lesson learned, every exam passed, and every new skill developed helps build confidence and opens doors to a brighter future.
Education empowers young women to dream without limits. Whether they aspire to become doctors, engineers, teachers, entrepreneurs, scientists, or leaders in their communities, quality education gives them the foundation to succeed.
By investing in education today, we are investing in a stronger, more inclusive South Africa tomorrow.
How You Can Celebrate Women’s Day
Women’s Day is about more than a public holiday. It is an opportunity to show appreciation and make a meaningful difference. Here are a few ways you can celebrate:
- Thank a teacher, mentor, mother, grandmother, or role model who has positively influenced your life.
- Support women-owned businesses in your community.
- Encourage young girls to pursue their education and follow their ambitions.
- Learn more about the women who helped shape South Africa’s history.
- Volunteer, donate, or support organisations that uplift and empower women and girls.
Even small acts of appreciation and encouragement can have a lasting impact.
Looking Ahead
As we prepare to celebrate 9 August, let us remember the remarkable women who marched with courage in 1956 and honour the countless women who continue to make a difference every day.
At The Tutor Company, we believe that every learner has the potential to create positive change. By supporting education, encouraging confidence, and inspiring lifelong learning, we can help build a future where every girl and woman has the opportunity to reach her full potential.
This Women’s Day, let us celebrate the women who came before us, appreciate the women around us today, and inspire the leaders of tomorrow.
Happy Women’s Day, South Africa!
